This is a rare 4.77 troy ounce (148.4 gram) crystallized specimen of native gold from the Diltz Mine in Bear Valley, Whitlock District, Mariposa County., California. Small amounts of arsenopyrite are coating portions of the specimen and there is also a very small amount of attached quartz. Rare specimen of this sort and size from the Diltz Mine. This nine-minute film clip was created for and included in the John Stewart Memorial concert, which took place May 3, 2008 at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. The Program featured live performances by Lindsey Buckingham, Timothy B. Schmit, Davy Jones, the We Five, Russ Kunkel, Shana Morrison, Henry Diltz, Chip Douglas, Billy Mumy, Buffy Ford, and the John Stewart Band, featuring Chuck McDermott, Dave Crossland, John Hoke, Dave Batti, Bob Hawkins and Dennis Kenmore. Speakers included Max Kennedy, Nick Reynolds, Paul Westphal George Yanok and Mikael Stewart, and filmed testimonials were sent in by Roseanne Cash and the astronauts John Glenn and Scott Carpenter. Tales from the Tavern is humbled and grateful to have been included in this wonderful celebration of Life, Love, Music and Magic.
This footage was shot live at Tales from the Tavern, 3-8-06 by Henry Diltz, Gary Strobl and Rob Dafoe. It was edited by Rob Dafoe - with sound mixing by Terry Albrecht and Bob Helman, and live sound by Tyson Leonard. |

This Could Be the Night

Henry Diltz: ... We went into the studio and cut a song called "This Could Be the Night", a Harry Nilsson tune, and it had the whole Spector "wall of sound". Part of the sound was to have lots of guitars, lots of drums, lots of bass - not just one of everything. So anyway, we recorded this song, and Brian Wilson came down when it was finished. He'd sit in the control booth wearing pajamas, robe, and slippers, listening to the song over and over and over again. We didn't talk much, but we loved having him there, cuz we loved the Beach Boys. Everything seemed to be going real well, except that Phil never put the song out.

... The Trio moved to Decca Records for a couple of albums before Stewart left and Shane and reynolds went their own separate way. "When I left the Trio, Stewart says "I wanted to form another trio, with Henry Diltz and a girl, though we couldn't find the right one.I discovered Buffy Ford in Fairfax, California, where she was working in little theater - she'd been on the road as a member of The Young Americans. But by that time, Henry was busy with his career as a photographer,and it didn't sound like Buffy and I need a third voice."...

This was recorded in January, 2001 at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va. The occasion was the WFMA Trbute to John Stewart.
In this clip John is joined by Dave Batti, John Hoke, Chuck McDermott, Henry Diltz, Dennis Kenmore, Pete Kennedy, Dave Crossland, and Maura Kennedy and Buffy Ford Stewart.
John told me before the gig that he was going to leave them bleeding in the aisles and he certainly did.
