A year on from its original UK screening it still has not been broadcast in any other country. In 2006 reporter Evan Williams gained access, on a tourist visa, to West Papua - a country to which journalists and foreign observers are flatly refused entry by the Indonesian government. After three weeks dodging Indonesian officials and police to gather interviews and information, he filed this report for Channel 4's "Unreported World" series. Part 1 (9'28"): ? We meet a group of tribal elders, some of whom have travelled for days, who congregate especially to tell the world media about widespread incidents of Indonesian killing and brutality in their native villages. ? The pretext for Evan Williams' visit to West Papua is the Wamena Festival, at which the local governor's speech proclaims Indonesia as "the ultimate in diversity". But for the locals, overrun by Indonesian oppression and largely outnumbered by subsidised Indonesian immigrants, is it diversity or occupation? ? Williams meets a man whose parents and friends were killed by the Indonesians and who has been fleeing the army, hiding out, for five years. He is led to a village in which the locals are mourning the deaths of relatives killed or missing since the March 2006 protests. "West Papua" expresses a yearning for his countrymen west of the New Guinea border to be free from Indonesian rule. West Papua is occupied by Indonesia solely on the basis of a sham "election" held in 1969, laughingly called the Act of Free Choice, in which a small representation of the total indigenous West Papuan population were threatened to have their tongues cut out if they did not vote for Indonesian sovereignty. Some background to the song: David heard the album "No!" by They Might Be Giants and was inspired to write a narrative song in a similarly lighthearted vein, a style he has seldom tackled. He remembered a childhood crush he'd had on the older sister of his schoolfriend Peter whose family were Pentecostal Christians. David actually attended one of the family's church services, probably so he could spend more time gawping at his friend's sister. Early in the service, however, he was startled to see her start speaking in tongues, at which point her father immediately (and loudly) said, "oh... she always has to be first, she's such a show off". David somehow managed to expertly work this anecdote into rhyming lines and verses for early solo performances of the song, however while arranging it for the band it became clear the two verses needed to be condensed into one, hence the device of "the woman sitting in front". In the TV clip David sings "What chance have I got/I've got no hair on my chest". The real line is "I've got no hair on my balls or my chest". The word "balls" was omitted at the request of Kerri-Anne's producers. The line "She's on a direct phone line to Jesus/And she screams like she just doesn't care" sometimes becomes "she screams like He's really there", depending on David's mood!";s:5:"title";s:1972:"Pentecostal Girl - My Friend The Chocolate CakePentecostal Girl - My Friend The Chocolate CakeDavid Bridie and Helen Mountfort from My Friend The Chocolate Cake perform "Pentecostal Girl" on 'Mornings with Kerri-Anne', Nine Network Australia, April 19 2007. A year on from its original UK screening it still has not been broadcast in any other country. In 2006 reporter Evan Williams gained access, on a tourist visa, to West Papua - a country to which journalists and foreign observers are flatly refused entry by the Indonesian government. After three weeks dodging Indonesian officials and police to gather interviews and information, he filed this report for Channel 4's "Unreported World" series about a people on the brink of eradication. Part 3 (7'46"): ? Evan Williams travels by air with members of the outlawed Free Papua Movement (OPM) to a remote highland location. Here he meets grieving but defiant women recently widowed by the Indonesian forces who have set up camp near their village. ? An interview with OPM leader Kelly Kwalik, one of the most wanted men in West Papua. His message is clear: he opposes the Indonesian forces which steal the land and resources from his people. Kwalik explains his reasons for taking foreign hostages. ? OPM members gather as a show of strength. Some have travelled for a week. Many have not seen each other in years. You be the judge. Written by Chaser members Andrew Hansen and Chris Taylor, this song about deceased well-known people ("The Eulogy Song") drew a national total of 3 telephone complaints when first aired as part of "The Chaser's War on Everything" on ABC Television Australia (Wednesday October 17 2007). The later large-scale negative reaction from the general public and Australia's oh-so-creative political leaders was largely fuelled by talkback radio hosts such as 3AW Melbourne's Neil Mitchell (who too will be a top bloke after death). Many of the listeners making complaints both to radio stations and to the ABC the following day had not actually seen the show but were simply following the lead of the various shock-horror media diatribes. The song, in fact, is part of the formidable satirical tradition of the great boundary pushers like Monty Python and Mavis Bramston - uncomfortable comedy which causes a ruckus due to its basis in fact, but ultimately serves its purpose of getting people thinking. Some explanatory stuff for overseas 'Tubers: ? Steve Irwin was the Crocodile Man, killed by a stingray in 2006. ? "Brocky" is Holden racing car driver Peter Brock, killed in a racing accident in 2006. ? Stan Zemanek was a radio "shock jock" who died in July 2007. His radio programme was littered with insults toward listeners by the largely reviled host. Zemanek's favourable treatment in all Australian media since his death is the consummate example of what Hansen's song is about. ? Martin Bryant is the universally loathed perpetrator of a shooting rampage in Port Arthur, Tasmania in 1996, in which he killed 35 people and injured 37 others. ? Don Bradman was a cricketer who played for Australia between 1928 and 1948. He died in 2001. ? Kerry Packer was a media mogul, one of the richest men in Australia and recipient of a kidney donated by his helicopter pilot in 2000. He died in 2005. ? Belinda Emmett was an actress and "soapie" star, most notably in "Home and Away". She died at the age of 32 of cancer in 2006. It was the mention of Emmett which reportedly drew the most public complaints - despite there being no actual disparaging references to her in the song. ?
