The easiest compilation video to make is one of Michael Jordan. All you need to do is take 5 games from his career and you'll have enough material for an entire news segment.
The most difficult compilation video to make is one of Michael Jordan. If you take any 5 games from his career, you'll have so much material you won't know what to cut out.
Therein lied the challenge of this edit for me. With the tons of MJ mixes out there, I wanted to do something more complete. I also wanted to focus on the aesthetics of his abilities. That led me to a path of picking not only classic clips, but rare ones and personal favorites. For those who didn't grow up in the 80s before MJ became a champion, they can never know the full experience of what watching Jordan was like. Before all the awards, the statistics, the monster games, the titles and the global appeal, MJ was about his incredible moves. In the playground, people stuck their tongues out and tried to imitate his drives to the basket. Later on, people imitated his fadeaway. But his athletic moves were singular and his alone - awesome in aesthetics, control, spontaneity, improvisation, instinct and athleticism.
MJ revolutionized the game with his individual exploits and we see bits and pieces of this in everyone today. From Kobe studying his shooting mechanics to create shots to Wade attacking the basket to Lebron transferring his power to his teammates to Iverson in his isolations to Carter in his dunking, MJ continues to be, as Drexler said, "The Pro's Pro".
But obviously, there will always be only one MJ. This video captures the essence of MJ stripped of everything but his pure, remarkable talents as completely as possible in 10 minutes. A truly complete edit would take a video several days long - even weeks - but that would be impossible anyway.
By blurring the line between sport and art, MJ became the greatest athletic artist we will ever know. "Black Cat" was his nickname to his friends for his cat-like reflexes and grace and panther-like power and killer instinct. This is my ultimate tribute, with excellence, in return for his excellence to the game of basketball.

It is my opinion that this game can be considered MJ's greatest game ever. The book "MJ's 50 Greatest Games" ranks this at #2. This is the game that signified the core and purity of Michael Jordan. Take away all the circus shots, amazing dunks, hang-time jumpers, acrobatic drives, huge scoring nights etc, and you had what Michael Jordan represented - the unparalleled desire and will to succeed in the most crucial moments and in the most dramatic fashion. The only question left after this game was whether MJ would be the greatest there ever will be.
MJ's sickness left him devoid of energy, food and sleep. During the game, someone mistakenly gave him Gatorlode instead of Gatorade which made things even worse since Gatorlode is a post-activity drink. But the Bulls needed this game since the series was tied 2-2 and losing this game meant they would have to go to 7 games to win the title. This was unacceptable to MJ. Also, that year's "MVP-trohy borrower" Karl Malone had to be defeated.
Going 13-27 (modest by MJ's standards) and at times, about to pass out, MJ stuck through and came up with the clutch FT, clutch rebound and of course, the famous clutch trey-winner. ESPN thought MJ could have still led the league in scoring if not for the injury and should that have been the case, the Wiz probably would have made the playoffs which would then have opened the door to anything possible.
In this game, MJ wanted to have a little statement for Richard Jefferson right before he retired. In truly MJ-like fashion, he once again summoned up a 60% shooting effort on call. With 7 straight FGs made in the 3rd quarter, MJ reversed Father Time and became the only player in history to break the 40 point barrier at age 40 and 4 days. With a barrage of silky perimeter shooting, MJ dominated from the outside with fades, step-back jumpers and in-your-face shots against Martin, Kidd, Jefferson and whoever.

And at age 40, even Father Time could not steal MJ's singular ability to raise his game at will. With Madison Square Garden as the center stage one last time, there was no doubt we'd see once again why there will never be anyone quite like him.
And we did. Running on sore knees and a stiff back, MJ began the game slowly. The Wizards were in a tight playoff battle and needed to function as a team. But then, Shandon Anderson began to yak and awoke the Beast. MJ took his team's 20 point deficit into his own hands by calmly entering the zone - finishing the half with 19 points in the final 6-7 minutes to get 26 on 9-14 shooting. Thanks Shandon.
In the 2nd half, the Knicks doubled and tripled every possession 40 year MJ had. Passing to get his team involved, the lackluster Wizards just could not match his zone. MJ clawed his way back to the final moment with his customary clutch shots and steals to set up, once again, the game-winner. Also, it kept solidifying the fact that MJ saved his best for the best teams. MJ rarely cared to score big against poor teams unless he had to since it was a chance to get the team to play. In MJ's first 19 games vs. Detroit, he averaged 36ppg including a 61pt spanking the year before (a game I also have edited on youtube.com). After this 59pt game on national TV on Easter Sunday in front of a record crowd at Detroit, the Pistons' coach Daly had enough. He vowed never to let MJ beat them again. Born was the beginning of the most awesome defense ever - "The Jordan Rules". The basics of the defense were to 'funnel MJ to the middle so the big guys could knock him on his butt'. But, the defense was so specific that there was a rule for what to do wherever MJ had the ball. Go here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_online/flashbacks/jordan/891106/
The "Jordan Rules" went on to revolutionize the game - making defense win championships. The Pistons went on to win two titles and their 'bruiserball' defense on Jordan forced the NBA to invent the flagrant foul. The Knicks and the Heat copied this football style and soon, the league's scoring plummeted. MJ, still scoring 30+ ppg was unaffected with his insane skills but the league itself couldn't score. We saw in the 90s, slow games with teams scoring just 60 points each with no one able to make any shots. After MJ retired, the NBA tinkered with the rules to get scoring back up and today, we are still seeing this tinkering with the shortened half-court clock, the lax hand-checking rules, the illegal step-in defense for centers and so forth. MJ is responsible for all this.
I remember this game vividly. Few NBA games were on national TV so the ads building this game's drama were strong. We knew MJ and the Pistons already hated each other. The Pontiac Silverdome had a record crowd. What was MJ going to do? Well, all he did was go 21-27 for 59. But, the real key was that he won the game on two clutch defensive stops - a block and steal on Zeke - to make sure his 59 didn't go to waste. Detroit Pistons on CBSThis is the single most important game of the modern basketball era.
MJ's jumper was laser-like here and I remember actually being upset that he was so 'on' since that would mean he would be driving less. I wanted to see more acrobatic shots. But, that's just being a selfish fan. The opening photo is from my camera. Here's the story:
I had just started to date a new girlfriend around this time who happened to hate basketball. Thankfully, MJ was in town so I decided to get some quick tickets at $400 apiece so she could say she saw MJ live to her grandkids. I heard standing room tickets at game-time were going for $800 so I felt great paying what I did - especially with my girlfriend complaining about going to a basketball game on the way there.
Now, seeing MJ live as a Wizard was bizarre but when he entered the stadium, as usual, it was as if all the air was sucked out of the room. Everyone stood up, camera lights flashed non-stop and the remembrance of what this man had done in his career as the greatest there ever will be filled the room thick. MJ standing on the court with his hands on his hips felt as if his elbows were touching one side of the stadium to the other. His presence was beyond gripping.
The game started with MJ missing some easy jumpers so he switched to attacking the basket. At age 38 with the bum knee, it was incredible. He gathered more highlight moves in this one game while scoring an efficient 26pts than most players do in an entire season. Of course, playing this way in the Garden was never a surprise.
But the amazing part of the game was what was happening to Sprewell as MJ smothered him mano-a-mano. MJ's mind-body challenge was giving him nerves of jello and Sprewell went a disastrous 0-10 until MJ sat on the bench when he finally made his first bucket. Lucky for Spree, the Knicks were playing well inside and the Wiz had to play catch up the entire time.
With NY up by 10 late in the 4th, MJ turned on his legend and willed his team with his customary, dramatic comeback. By this point, the score was tied and my girlfriend was on the edge of her seat - strictly because the drama of who was going to win overwhelmed her. I said to her, 'Jordan's going to get the last shot and he's going to hit it. That's what he does. I guarantee it.' And when the moment happened, she jumped out of her seat with the rest of the Garden in amazement. She became, enlightened. And although she returned to hating basketball, she would forever tell stories about the one time she saw MJ. It's still the playoff record and is ranked 3rd in the book "Michael Jordan's Top 50 Games".
NBA Sophomore MJ was just 23 years old but he would show the world in just his 6th playoff game that there would never be another player like him again.
This Celtics team was considered perhaps the greatest team ever. Having won 67 games, 40-1 at home, 31 straight at home and on a 14 win streak, MJ single-handedly almost dismantled them. After scoring 49 points in Game 1 (which I also have up on youtube), McHale said, "That will never happen again." The Celtics went back and brainstormed to stop MJ and came back to hold MJ to 63. At times, putting 4-5 bodies on Jordan, Jordan was well, still Jordan.
MJ missed 64 games in the regular season with a broken foot and returned just 6 weeks earlier but in this game, the legend of Michael Jordan was born. Scoring on vicious attacks, athletic jumpers from everywhere and finesse and power moves all at once, MJ displayed an intensity to win and take the entire Boston Team all by himself. It was chilling to watch.
Scaring the guts out of the Champion Celtics in their unbeatable home court, MJ played a game that still stands as the greatest post-season record of all-time with 63 points. The only quote you need to remember is Bird saying, "That was God disguised as Michael Jordan. He's the most awesome player I've ever seen...he was getting his points in the flow of the game...scary." This game was interesting in that MJ was meeting Shaq in LA for the first time. But the story of the game was the game. The Bulls were taken aback by an amazing night from Van Exel and Shaq and fell behind by 22 at the half. MJ's shot was only visible at the end of the half which was probably why the Bulls didn't drop by 30.
In the 2nd half, MJ became what he would call "The Utility Man". He plugged all the holes and did the dirty work - hustling on defense, setting screens, passing to the hot man etc. Down 18 points in the 4th, Kukoc and Pip stepped up and stood besides MJ's leadership and brought the game to OT. With the Bulls playing their 3rd road game in 4 nights, no one but MJ and Pip bothered to show up. MJ's crystal ball "words of wisdom" before the game should have been heeded but the energy just wasn't there. MJ, however, was his usual self with his intensity and defense - even though at 10-24, his shot took a rare night off by his standards - especially with him shooting a torrid 58.4% in his last 8 games leading up to this one.
But the main development was that Elden Campbell did his best Shaq impersonation and allowed the feisty Lakers to control the game this night. On a side note, it was pure entertainment watching a young Kobe Bryant displaying his zest in playing against his idol for the 2nd time in his career (the 1st game is also uploaded on my channel).
And while the game was not the grand show it was supposed to be with Shaq out of the picture, MJ's footwork and cool fades were as satisfying as ever. Both wins and both classics. The first game was just his 7th as a rookie. Never forget, MJ was already considered the greatest individual player with his dominant, athletic game. The last game showcases his finesse game. He did play as a Wizard in NY again for the last time and scored 39.

The stunning shot over Divac's outstretched arms dropped even with MJ unable to follow through due to Divac's length. But it was MJ's clutch defense that truly saved the win - coming up with the crucial strip to prevent LA from taking a clean, game-winner to make sure OT would happen. As usual, making these types of clutch shots and defensive plays in these moments were the norm for MJ so it came as no surprise. And although this game would become the poorest shooting game of the series for MJ at just 11-28, the shots that mattered most in the end all hit nothing but net. Battling tendinitis in his legs, a Laker team at home ready to protect the fort and a twisted knee from the Pistons series, MJ still took it to the hole in the clutch to live up to his flair for the spectacular.
(The rest of this series is uploaded in succession except Game 2 which was uploaded last year. You can find it here www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBseRlgoSLc
For the record, MJ would end the series with some preposterous numbers: 31.2ppg, 6.6 rebs, 11.4 assists, 2.8 steals, 1.4 blocks, 56.64% FG, 50% 3FG and 85% FT).

Although MJ came out with perhaps a bit too much energy on 1-5 shooting, his polished game finished him strong with 10-19 accuracy the rest of the way for another close, comeback win in his stadium. The usual heroics were on display for the last time ever before the playoffs. And NBC led the charge with a half-hour tribute to the Greatest Ever before the game. MJ closed it out in customary fashion against his now, weakening NY rivals but the old emotions were still there. And through it all, the eerily calm demeanor in which MJ dominated made it seem like he was just tuning up and scrimmaging for the upcoming real season. And we all know what happened then.
